![]() ![]() ![]() The Santa Barbara oil spill also had an immediate impact in national politics. The state of California strengthened its environmental regulatory agencies, including fines for corporate polluters, and enacted a moratorium on new offshore oil drilling platforms. This episode created a public outcry, placed oil corporations on the defensive, and inspired politicians at the local, state, and national levels to take action. And then during January-February 1969, the residue from the Santa Barbara oil spill covered more than 35 milies of Southern California coastline and had a catastrophic ecological impact. Investigations revealed that industrial drainage was washing up on Venice Beach, the Greater Los Angeles Zoo was flushing raw sewage directly into the Los Angeles River, and corporations were dumping solid waste into the Inner Harbor. Local politicians, residents, and environmental organizations had already been demanding action to address the smog crisis, chemical toxins such as DDT, and pollutants in the drinking supply. The episode received massive local and national media coverage, outraged public opinion, and contributed to a widespread sense that Southern California was "losing the fight against pollution of its irreplaceable water resources," in the words of the Los Angeles Times. In January 1969, a Union Oil drilling platform exploded off the coast of Santa Barbara, California, dumping around 100,000 barrels worth of crude oil into the ocean, killing wildlife and washing up on the beaches enjoyed by coastal residents. Interior Secretary Admits Lax Drilling Enforcement As a result, air quality emerged as an issue of great concern for the growing environmental movement. ![]() This event was more widely-publicized, thanks to a growing awareness of the health effects of air pollution, and caused people across the country to connect these severe events to the pollution in their communities. Thirteen years later, a similar smog event occurred over Thanksgiving weekend, again linked to the deaths of about 200 people. Two of its most severe smog events occurred in the Novembers of 19 when, as an article in the EPA Journal reported, “Indian summer heat inversions trapped the chemicals and particulates from industrial smokestacks, chimneys, and vehicles that crammed the city streets, keeping the pollutants from rising.” The 1953 event closed at least two airports, caused respiratory distress among many New York residents, and was later linked to the deaths of between 170 and 200 people, though at the time its severity was not known. New York City, the country’s economic center, suffered from smog under certain weather conditions. Driven by fear and empowered with information, the American public was poised to demand change. Paul Ehrlich’s book The Population Bomb (1968) connected the dots and helped the public realize that the issues were all related: an exponentially growing population meant an increasing demand for limited resources, which led to unwise decisions about resource use. Pervasive smog in New York City and Los Angeles, the Santa Barbara oil spill, and the Cuyahoga River fires made headlines and frightened Americans across the country. Soon before the crisis took its final form, several immensely popular books including Rachel Carson’s 1962 Silent Spring and Ralph Nader’s 1965 Unsafe at Any Speed pushed the public to question the relationship between the government, tasked with protecting the public interest, and industries, incentivized to act in their own economic interests. During the late 1960s, an “environmental crisis” took shape as a series of environmental catastrophes and revelatory books transformed the American environmental consciousness.

The smallest row that can be read accurately indicates the visual acuity in that specific eye. A person taking the test covers one eye from 6 metres or 20 feet away, and reads aloud the letters of each row, beginning at the top. Subsequent rows have increasing numbers of letters that decrease in size. The first lineĬonsists of one very large letter, which may be one of several letters, for example E, H, or N. The normal Snellen chart is printed with eleven lines of block letters. The original chart shows A, C, E, G, L, N, P, R, T, 5, V, Z, B, D, 4, F, H, K, O, S, 3, U, Y, A, C, E, G, L, 2. Snellen developed charts using symbols based in a 5×5 unit grid. Many ophthalmologists and vision scientists now use an improved chart known as the LogMAR chart. When published, all the width variants are contained in a single dynamic HTML file, and the most apt one displayed to suit the host device. For the best results you might want to manually create different crops in your images or drop certain elements or content from your mobile site for simplicity, while keeping core text and menu options shared across all variants. You can then choose which edits will replicate across them all to minimise effort. Web Designer can also cater to a wide variety of screen sizes and input methods with its Responsive Web Design feature, which makes several variants of a site with widths to suit various screens. Here we’re modifying Twitter, Facebook and email buttons so that they stick in place while the page scrolls It’s surprising how quickly you can find yourself doing something quite advanced: it took us less than five minutes to open a site created in version 9, reposition the social media buttons, make them stick in place during scrolling and apply the change to the whole site. A new sticky feature also lets you keep elements stationary while the user scrolls the page. It’s simple to group or ungroup elements to keep them together, and to make them repeat on all pages of a site. Text, images and other elements can all be placed freely on the page, with guidelines appearing as necessary to help you align them with the edges or centre of other elements, or with the page itself. While Web Designer won’t make you an expert overnight, it’s commendably easy to get started. This five-page website walks you through common web design concepts, shows you how to create, modify and preview them on the document itself, and gives an insight into some of Web Designer’s more advanced features. The interactive introduction document which loads automatically when you first open the software is ideal for novices. Expanding galleries docked at the right include the all-important Designs gallery, which is home to a large amount of free content including graphical elements, buttons, widgets, themes and so on. There are no dramatic changes in this version, but several new features reflect trends in web design toward fewer pages, increased scrolling, and sliding, fading or other animated elements. The first bit of good news is that the price has fallen slightly since our last review: the standard software costs £35, Premium is £70, and upgrades to the latter from earlier releases cost from £30-£45. ![]() As with earlier releases, Web Designer 11 comes as either a standard version containing a generous set of core features, or the bells-and-whistles Premium which we’re reviewing here. Solve the following quadratic equations by factoring. Using techniques other than factoring to solve quadratic equations is discussed in Chapter 10. Not all quadratics can be factored using integer coefficients. Each of these solutions is a solution of the quadratic equation. Putting each factor equal to 0 gives two first-degree equations that can easily be solved. Equations of the formįactoring the quadratic expression, when possible, gives two factors of first degree. Polynomials of second degree are called quadratics. The reason is that a product is 0 only if at least one of the factors is 0. ![]() Thus, to solve an equation involving a product of polynomials equal to 0, we can let each factor in turn equal 0 to find all possible solutions. This command identifies the pitches in a polyphonic audio recording and places them into a clip on a new MIDI track. The same sorts of resequencing and reprocessing operations can be applied to anything you slice - sometimes with unexpected results. Experiment with slicing audio from different sources, such as voices and ambient textures. Slicing is most commonly applied to drum loops, but there’s no reason to stop there. The Arpeggiator and Random devices can yield particularly interesting results. Then insert the effects after this new sub-Rack.įor even more creative possibilities, try inserting MIDI effects (see ‘Live MIDI Effect Reference’) before the Drum Rack. To process several slices with the same set of effects, multi-select their chains in the Drum Rack’s chain list and press CTRL- G(Win) / CMD- G(Mac) to group them to their own nested Rack. You can achieve a similar effect by dragging the Drum Rack’s pads onto each other to swap their note mappings.īecause each slice lives in its own chain in the Drum Rack, you can easily process individual slices with their own audio effects. But you can create new patterns by simply editing the MIDI notes (see ‘Editing MIDI’). This opens up many new editing possibilities, including:īy default, your sliced MIDI data will form a chromatically-ascending “staircase“ pattern in order to trigger the correct chains in their original order. ![]() Playing the MIDI clip will trigger each chain in the Drum Rack in order, according to the timing information that you specified or that was embedded in the audio. Note: Live will take a few moments to process all of this information. Adjusting one of these Macros will adjust the mapped parameter in each Simpler simultaneously. In the factory Slicing presets, these include basic envelope controls and parameters to adjust the loop and crossfade properties of each slice. The Drum Rack’s Macro Controls will be pre-assigned to useful parameters for the Simplers, as determined by the settings in the selected slicing preset. Each chain will be triggered by one of the notes from the clip, and will contain a Simpler with the corresponding audio slice loaded. A Drum Rack will be added to the newly created track, containing one chain per slice. The clip will contain one note for each slice, arranged in a chromatic sequence. A new MIDI track will be created, containing a MIDI clip.Once you’ve made your slicing choices and clicked OK, a number of things will happen: With this option disabled, any changes that result from warping will not be reflected in the sliced clip the sliced version will instead sound like the original, “raw” audio. With “Preserve warped timing” enabled, the clip will be sliced in such a way that timing alterations as a result of warping are preserved. The Slicing Preset chooser contains a few Ableton-supplied slicing templates, as well as any of your own that you may have placed in your User Library’s default presets folder (see ‘Default Presets’). If your audio file is in REX format (see ‘REX Mode’), the slicing will be based on the file’s internal timing information and you won’t see this chooser. ![]() You can fix this by either setting a lower slice resolution or by selecting a smaller region of the clip to slice. ![]() Since a Rack can contain a maximum of 128 chains, Live won’t let you proceed if your choice would result in more than 128 slices. The top chooser allows you to slice at a variety of beat resolutions or according to the clip’s transients or Warp Markers. This offers a list of slicing divisions, as well as a chooser to select the Slicing Preset. When you select Slice to New MIDI track, you’ll be presented with a dialog box. The Drum Rack (see ‘Drum Racks’) provides an ideal environment for working with sliced files, and most of the setup happens automatically after you make a few choices: Instead, it simply splits the original audio into portions of time, regardless of the content. Slicing differs from the Convert commands below, in that it doesn’t analyze the musical context of your original audio. This command divides the audio into chunks which are assigned to single MIDI notes. When an audio clip is selected, four conversion commands are available in the Create Menu or the right-click(Win) / CTRL- click(Mac) context menu for the clip.Ĭontext Menu Commands For Converting Audio To MIDI. (Note: the features discussed in this chapter are not available in the Intro and Lite Editions.)Īlthough Live’s warping allows for audio files to be used much more flexibly than in traditional audio software, there are also a number of ways to extract musical information from audio clips and place it into MIDI clips, for additional creative possibilities. |
